Delearn was ecorded live in concert at Iklectik in London in February 2021 on the Amoenus 12 channel immersive sound system. The recording is ambisonic, and recreates the surround experience on headphones. The music is performed using a musical instrument capturing the electromyogram signal of performer arm muscle exertion. This is mapped to banks of samples using IRCAM’s CaTART granular synthesizer. The mapping is created on the fly by using neural networks that associate movement qualities of performer gesture with audio meta-data of an original source track. The source track is my piece for chamber orchestra, DSCP, originally recorded by Artzoyd and Ensemble Musique Nouvelles. I start with a taluba rasa – an empty neural network – and associate a series of arm positions with microscopic grains in the source music. The neural network begins to be trained after the first two poses, creating a continuous gesture/sound interpolation. I keep adding postures to the training set until the end of the track, where gesticulation navigates a multidimensional timbre information space.
