When I participated in an online event called “Ideala” at Forestlimit in Japan, I gave a performance in which all viewers could control the modular synthesizer from theWeb by providing a controller system on the Web that allowed viewers to operate the modular synthesizer at the venue.This album is the recording of this performance.

I developed a web application with 16 faders on a web site that anyone could access. This controller was connected to the computer at the venue by using a PubSub architecture with Google Firebase’s Realtime Database. This computer was connected to the modular synthesizer via SuperCollider and ExpertSleeper’s ES-8. The little application on the computer subscribed to the messages from the Web and passed the messages to SuperCollider. SuperCollider generated Control Voltages according to the messages.

Every audience member could control the modular synthesizer in real time by moving the faders, so this performance was performed by anonymous performers controlling one instrument.

I’ve thought that there is a limitation to the thinking and motion carried out by a single person and I’ve been interested in performances done by multiple performers with different thinking and unpredictable motion for unpredictable and more complex sounds and music.

As a result, some interesting sounds and some boring sounds were performed. I edited the recording by reducing the number of boring points and separating them into some parts for listening to as a piece of music. The last one is the whole recording processed with granulation.

teetering on the edge of rhythmic but standing firmly in the ground of odd tonality, this release leaves enough sonic space to infer one's own ideas about the form. Percussive type sounds bonk through the mix but all of them have a softness and power to them. bkudler
